Boat capsizes off Djibouti, killing at least 139 migrants and leaving 84 missing

2026-10-11

At least 139 migrants died, including at least 15 children, and about 84 people remained missing.
The boat was carrying 305 people from Djibouti to Yemen when it capsized near Guhere, north of Obock, during the night of October 8–9.
About 82 people survived; the IOM said the survivors were Ethiopian nationals.
IOM teams were assisting local authorities, who continued search-and-rescue operations.
The official death toll counts bodies buried by Djiboutian authorities; other bodies buried by migrants will not be included until authorities verify them, the IOM’s Djibouti chief told the Associated Press.
