The EU and China reach an agreement on trade in hybrid vehicles and step up dialogue on rare earths

According to Maroš Šefčovič, the agreement to moderate Chinese exports of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles to the EU paves the way for a reduction of more than half.
The agreement should also improve European companies’ access to the Chinese market and facilitate access to rare earths.
It provides for reduced tariffs on European exports valued at nearly €4 billion, with customs savings of at least €225 million.
The EU’s trade deficit with China is about €1 billion a day, while low-priced Chinese imports are worrying European industries.
European Commissioner for Trade Maroš Šefčovič is meeting his Chinese counterpart in Beijing on October 8 and 9 to secure concrete commitments.
France and Germany are proposing to strengthen the EU’s powers to restrict access to its market in the event of trade distortions.
