Repayment of principal of up to 1 million lira planned for investors in troubled funds

The first five articles of the bill were adopted by the Grand National Assembly’s General Assembly; the opposition warned that payments of up to 1 million lira were not guaranteed and that claims could be cancelled.
Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz said that if the measure passes Parliament, payments could begin in October.
Measures were imposed on 131 funds affiliated with seven companies, affecting more than 455,000 investors.
The draft provides for principal repayments of up to 1 million lira per person, based on the net investment amount; those who have already recovered their principal and those who engaged in unlawful transactions will not be eligible for payment.
Payments will be funded by the assets of liquidated funds, voluntary repayments by those who made large profits, and the sale of assets belonging to companies and individuals subject to the measures.
Payments have been made to approximately 44,000 people across three funds whose liquidation is being managed by Ziraat Bank; discussions regarding the Atlas fund are ongoing.
