Euronews and Der Spiegel reported that the ceasefire took effect at 3 a.m. local time on Oct. 27, although the White House had initially announced Oct. 29 as its start.
The White House said the pause is intended to allow humanitarian aid into the city and enable civilian evacuations through a designated safe passage.
Melania Trump led talks with civilian negotiators from Russia and Ukraine, according to her office.
Civilian teams are to assess residents’ needs, while people wishing to leave are to receive transport to a destination of their choice. RBC-Ukraine later reported that evacuees and a Ukrainian delegation set out for Anapa.
White House estimates cited by Euronews and The Moscow Times put Oleshky’s remaining population at about 2,000, including around 50 children; most residents are elderly.
Channel One Russia reported that Russia’s military chief said Russian troops would observe a ceasefire in the Kherson direction from Oct. 27. Melania Trump said the truce also covered other parts of the Kherson region for aid convoys.
