Drone attacks hit merchant ships near Bulgaria and Romania

The Liberia-flagged container ship CONTSHIP JET was struck by three naval drones off Cape Kaliakra; the crew evacuated in liferafts. The vessel later sank, and the military prosecutor’s office opened an investigation.
Between October 5 and 23, eight merchant ships near Bulgaria and Romania were hit or involved in drone incidents, Rumen Radev said.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev called for joint efforts and talks with Romania and Turkey on maritime safety and strengthening surveillance of Bulgaria’s sea and airspace.
Radev said the logic points to Russia, but Bulgaria has no evidence to accuse it.
The European Parliament condemned the attacks and called for a naval mission in the Black Sea; the resolution names Russia as responsible.
A French naval patrol aircraft tracked the drones, and ships in the area had been warned of the danger of an attack.
